The Luxor temple is constructed on sandstone blocks from Nubia, in south-west Egypt and surrounded by mud-brick walls, it also symbolizes the separation between the world and the sacred realm of gods.
The Annual Opet festival is considered as one of the most religious festivals in ancient Egypt. The temple of Luxor has always been an amazing and sacred site after the construction of Christian Church and monastery and finally the building of Mosque of Abu el-Haggag which is still in use today.
Colossi of Memnon
The colossi of Memnon has two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III on the west bank of Luxor. Due to the earthquake, these statues were known for a bell-like sound. Further, the sound usually happened in the morning due to the rising temperature and humidity.
The legs of the king’s statues are carved by the smaller images of his Great Royal wife Queen Tiye and his mother, Queen Mutemiya. When the two statues were carved out, their purpose was to guard the entrance of Amenhotep’s mortuary temple. Though it is damaged by nature and ancient tourists, the statues are still away impressive.
Ramesseum – Ramses II Mortuary Temple
Ramesseum is the enormous and ancient memorial temple of Ramses II. It is near to the site of Seti I’s ruined temple which is again located in the Theban necropolis. This is in the upper part of Egypt across the river Nile with the west bank of the modern and new city of Luxor. The design of Ramses’s mortuary temple follows the new kingdom architecture.
Most of the temples of Ramesseum are damaged. But still, the ruined architecture gives us a brief idea about its massive buildings and statues. There are a lot of storage rooms in the temple. And they were built using mud bricks to store the seeds, clothes, leathers, oil jars and wines around the temple. This place also inspired Shelley’s famous poem “Ozymandias” the classical name for Ramses.
